A family-sized chef’s kitchen in St. Charles, Illinois

The layout can make or break a kitchen design when it comes to establishing a hospitable vibe and maintaining high function. This existing kitchen, while sufficient in size and counter space, was not conducive to the amount of activity that happened regularly in this energetic family. A considerable amount of time socializing and cooking was always happening, and the PB Kitchen Design team, in collaboration with Angie Fansler of Angie’s Interiors in Geneva, Illinois, was challenged to plan a space not only with an amazing workflow, but a cherished place to gather in the house.

A professional (yet inconspicuous) chef’s kitchen

Our client wanted the kitchen to perform like a professional chef’s kitchen, but with appliances that were less conspicuous than what is usually seen in a restaurant. Instead, she preferred to create a warm and uniquely special atmosphere where she and her large Italian family would cook, create, laugh, and work.

Sans white.

It’s not always necessary to select a white color scheme to achieve a fresh, clean look. The client chose a traditional layout that reflected her unique personality while maintaining a current style. Warm, yet still vibrant, the decision to incorporate two-toned cabinets is right on trend with the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2017 trend report.

Breaking up the counter space.

The long wall in this room housing the range and refrigerator is an asset. Our team knew we could place the massiveness of the tall storage and refrigeration/freezer at one end to shorten the counter run to a more reasonable width and consolidate the cooktop, prep sink, and counter space.

Big, but still “human sized.”

To be an approachable space, the homeowner wanted to make sure that despite the generous square footage and 10′ ceilings, guests would not feel overwhelmed in her kitchen. The cabinets were proportioned, with panel heights and widths carefully considered.

(Design) challenge accepted.

The room has a large scale at 500 square feet (not including the breakfast nook). Combined with the 10′ ceilings and the long list of appliances and storage requirements from the client, designing this space was a challenge we long for in all our commissioned projects.

Power appliances.

The column refrigerator and freezer were a must. We opted not to stack the ovens within the tall cabinet run on the kitchen’s short wall. Instead, the under-counter placement of the side-by-side single ovens on the inside of the island is convenient for our client and was key to maintaining a millwork feel around the room. The six-burner range top is well-suited to the client’s performance needs and perfectly sized to match the custom steel hood above it.

Completely unique.

Imagine washing dishes in this beautiful Herbau apron front sink while gazing at your garden.

This kitchen has its own personality, not one borrowed or inspired by another kitchen. And, it accomplished the goal of “hiding” a large number of appliances, while being efficiently placed. The client can bake her cake and eat it too!
